Woodlands

Woodlands are wooded upland areas or forests where the water table is two feet or more below the sandy soil. Pine and oak trees compete for light, nutrients, and water in these areas. Within the central part of the Pinelands is the dwarf or "pygmy" forest where trees scarcely reach an average height of four feet.

A variety of amphibians and reptiles, birds, fish, invertebrates, mammals, and plants inhabit the forests. The only poisonous snake in the Pinelands, the timber rattlesnake, is classified as endangered.
