Pinelands Culture

Pinelands residents have used their knowledge of the region to shape the landscape and to create their folk life. By using the region's natural resources, they have changed portions of the barrens into rich farmlands.

They have shaped artifacts, machines, and tools tailored to their environments such as machines for harvesting cranberries, schooners for the Delaware Bay, and sneakboxes for the Barnegat Bay. Their deep attachment to the region is reflected in their carvings, legends, music, paintings, songs, and stories. All these exhibit what Pinelands life is like. While there are many ways to understand the Pinelands, its folk life is one of the most revealing.
